Beliminal
The Challenge
In an ever-evolving business landscape, staying ahead requires more than adopting new ways of working – it requires fundamental rethinking of how work is done.
Beliminal faced the challenge of advocating for agile and innovative practices while embodying these principles within its own system. The primary mission was to transform internal processes to showcase a living model of agility and innovation, ensuring that the solutions offered to clients were not only preached but actively practised. This required continuous experimentation with work structures and policies, making them more dynamic, fluid and responsive. In short, pushing the boundaries of conventional business practices.
The Solution
Beliminal adopted a radical approach by using its own organisational structure as a sandbox for experimentation with agile, future of work and innovative working practices. This involved several key strategies:
- Implementing a holistic operating rhythm: Beyond adopting Scrum or Kanban for managing work, Beliminal has integrated agile principles into all aspects of its operations, from sales and marketing to client engagements and internal decision-making.
- Cultivating a culture of continuous learning and feedback: Established regular feedback loops to iteratively improve processes and consciously cultivate habits around asking for feedback.
- Decentralising decision-making: To enhance responsiveness and innovation, Beliminal created a truly flat structure, empowering all Liminals to make the decisions that they are closest to. They are also supported with guidance on how to make decisions, using both the advice process and – for bigger decisions – a consent-based approach.
- Promoting remote and flexible working practices: Emphasising work-life integration and flexibility, Beliminal adopted remote working technologies and flexible schedules long before they became the global norm, ensuring that team members could work effectively from anywhere.
- Micro roles over rigid job descriptions: We have defined micro roles (we call them hats), that we continually evolve. Liminals may wear different hats at different times, enabling us to flexibly cover all jobs and facilitate continuous learning.
Beliminal will always be a work in progress, but what’s most important is our commitment to continuous participatory change. We are all part of it, and we will never stop adapting.
The Result
The continuous transformation of Beliminal has yielded significant results:
- Increased innovation: By adopting these practices we have shortened our innovation cycles, and rapidly developed new services and improvements to existing offerings.
- Enhanced employee satisfaction: Our emphasis on autonomy, mastery, and purpose has led to higher job satisfaction and Liminals who are more engaged and committed to the company’s vision.
- Proven success: Living its own teachings, Beliminal has become a case study for potential clients, showcasing the effectiveness of its operating model through its thriving organisational health and adaptability.
